The canal that used to be an indispensable
way for transportation is today a much
frequented way of adventures.

Dalsland's Canal, classified as a manner of
national concern for the cultural heritage,
offers many adventures in nature. It is
especially suitable for families and others
who wants peace and quietness,
surrounded by magnificent nature.

The aquaduct
The aqueduct was finished in 1868. It's 32 and a half-meter long
and was made by the company, Bergsunds Mekaniska Verkstad,
in Stockholm. The sheet iron are put together with 33 000 rivets.
The canal was inaugura-ted in the 19-20th of September 1868
by the king Charles XV
For some decades to come the canal was used as a way for
transportation, just as it was planned. Thereafter the railway
took over, and left the canal to the leisure boats.
Dalsland's Canal is a 250 kilometres long system of short canals
and the lakes of Dalsland. It has 28 sluices with a difference in
altitude on 59 metres.
It takes at least three days to sail all the way, but please spend
some more time taking pan of all the experiences the canal
voyage gives. This could be a voyage on the canal:
In Köpmannebro we say good-bye to Lake Vänern. If we can
we take a tour on the Snäcke Canal, which really are the lakes
Animmen and AIr. Otherwise we go directly through Upperud to
HÃ¥verud.
If you take a tour on Dalsland's Canal you will find yourself in a district rich of lakes. Small and large lakes
combine the canal and only one mile is excavated. This gives you a 24-miles long navigable system of lakes.
Sluices
After the sluice in HÃ¥verud we find the peculiar aqueduct and we
are on the lake RÃ¥varpen. Here it's suitable to steer for
Högsbyn in Tisselskog where the ancient people of Dalsland
engraved messages in the rocks.
After passing some sluices, one is in LÃ¥ngbron, we reach the lake
Laxsjön and continue north past Billingsfors. Having the
Bengtsfors village in the background we steer for the lake LelÃ
¥ngen. Here we have two alternatives; we could choose Västra
Silen and pass the sluice in Krokfors and than the lake Östra Silen.
We could also sail north up to Lennartsfors.
When we turn to the south we want to explore the lake Stora Le.
That is the longest, the wildest, and the deepest of the lakes. At
some points you must dive 102 metres before you reach the bottom.
A voyage on the canal is a voyage on one of the most beautiful
waterways in the world
and a voyage through "Sweden in miniature".
The canal was built in the 1860's when the Swedish-Norwegian government decided to combine the long lakes in
Dalsland with the province of Värmland and the Lake Vänern.
The purpose was to transport products on the water from the iron- and sawmills in Värmland.
The task to build the canal was given to Nils Ericsson, whose greatest
challenge was to create a way past the rapid cataract in HÃ¥verud. Due to
the ground conditions he couldn't build a normal sluice there. The rod was
not durable enough; the force was rapid and the steep slope too steep.
The solution was a groove of sheet iron hanging over the force, where the
boats could go. And so was one of the most peculiar buildings in Sweden a
fact.
